Systems & Subversions Exhibition Opening Reception @ IDEA Space

September 5, 2013 4:30 pm

Systems & Subversions Exhibition Opening Reception & IDEA Cabaret: Systems of Perception & Artificial Natures
Exhibit dates 9/5 – 11/5/2013 IDEA Space IDEA

In this brave new world of bio-engineering, artificial intelligence, and performance-enhancing drugs, we test the definitions of life, consciousness, and human capabilities. In so doing, are we creating gods or monsters? Systems & Subversions explores this question by featuring several art projects that create, examine, and/or disrupt natural and artificial systems.  Featuring both high-tech, digital artworks and low-tech “DIY” inspired projects, the exhibition engages issues of audience co-creation of content, participation, and interactivity. Each piece in the exhibition either creates a system in which the audience may participate, uncovers hidden systems, or actively unravels (or hacks) pre-established systems to achieve alternative aims. Associated programming and events address issues of bio-hacking and bio-ethics, manipulation of the environment, and the “fair use” of DNA.

Andy Tirado: ˈhōl @ IDEA Space

November 1, 2013 5:41 pm

November 1 – December 13, 2013
Andy Tirado:
ˈhōl
Coburn Gallery

In part, the title ˈhōl refers to the ‘negative space’ of a decades-long hiatus from creating art and the fullness that a more recent and unexpected return to it has meant for the artist. In part it refers directly to the work itself, specifically the voids, holes, and ‘negative spaces’ that, are just as important and interesting as the objects themselves. The work also speaks of the human experience and condition.
